Iona Green is a ceramic sculptor currently based in Kent/ East Sussex UK. She studied ceramics at Mayfield School where her passion for ceramics began. She then studied an Art Foundation at Brighton before graduating from Goldsmiths University in 2018 with a BA in Design. Drawing on her background of traditional and sculptural techniques, she creates one of a kind sculptures and collections.
Artist Statement
Iona Green explores the interplay between growth and decay, presence and absence, the organic and the crafted. Her ceramic practice is deeply enmeshed with the environments she inhabits reflecting a porous entanglement between human, matter, memory, and life’s inevitable decay.
Working through slow, hand-built sculpting techniques, Iona allows character and rhythm to emerge intuitively, embracing the slippage between control and chance. The resulting forms are personified, sitting somewhere between creature and sculpture, inviting readings that are both familiar and estranged. Surfaces are raw, ruptured, and marked by the unpredictable reactions of clay, glaze, and flux- these visual and tonal descriptors evoking a sense of lived time and transformation. The instinctive nature of her process gives the work its rhythm, charm, and quiet vitality.
“I like my pieces to be tactile and playful- contemporary ceramics with an ancient feel.”
